PCI Northeast hosts “Sustainability through Durability, Adaptability and Deconstructibility” session at BuildBoston 2010

The session is Friday November 19, 2010 from 8:30 - 10:00 AM

The longer a building is in service the smaller the environmental impact is over its lifetime of use. Deconstruction (DfD) may be one of the most important green design strategies for achieving material sustainability. According to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) “...the reuse of building materials and components from disassembled structures will help move the building industry away from a linear system and toward a circular system with end-of-life materials reprocessed and used as inputs into new buildings.” Precast Concrete is one of the few material systems that can meet this demand.

Through a series of case examples we will discuss how precast can easily adapt to future changes. We will discuss connection technologies and strategies for adaptability and outline the requirements for high performance building design with precast concrete.

FEATURED PROJECT

Logan Airport Economy Lot Expansion, East Boston, MA

A change in plans doesn’t mean starting all over when designing with precast concrete.

Economy Parking Garage

Logan Airport in East Boston, MA is growing, and thats a good thing until you have to find a parking space. Original Plans: 1,937 new parking spaces; Revised Plans: 2,920 new parking spaces. Scheduling can be challenging during normal construction but doubling the size of a project and keeping to the original timetable is asking for problems. According to Camille Bechara, P.E. with Parsons Brinkerhoff, the projects engineer, “The use of precast concrete made this change efficient and possible to meet the schedule.” Designed, manufactured, delivered and erected by Blakeslee Prestress, Inc. in 7 months.

Designing and Building Sustainable K-12 Schools (October 28)

Webinar

The program requirements for school construction have changed over the past years, recently with an increased emphasis on sustainable design. Today's schools need to be durable, high-performance facilities with low maintenance costs. This webinar will present practical approaches to designing and building sustainable schools utilizing precast concrete. Some of the specifics covered include aesthetics, energy efficiency, site impact, schedule, LEED certification and ways in which designers can control cost and quality in precast projects.
