Dominion Energy Brayton Point Power Station, Somerset, MA

Dominion Energy Brayton Point Power Station

Brayton Point is the largest fossil-fueled generating facility in New England, consisting of four generating units that produce enough electricity to power about 1.5 million homes, using low-sulfur coal, natural gas and fuel oil as its fuel.

Construction is under way on two massive 500-foot cooling towers at the Dominion Energy Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, MA. Each tower stands on top of precast concrete piles that were specially designed, produced and installed by Vynorius Prestress Inc. Unistress is providing the first 30 feet of the 500 foot towers consisting of 88 precast columns and 88 lintel beams for the two new closed loop cooling towers, as well as interior A-Frames and flumes.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Parking Garage Built in 4 Months, Bridgeport, CT

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Parking Garage

St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT underwent both 125,000 sq. ft. of renovation and 125,000 sq. ft. of expansion to meet the community’s needs. Space in the urban area was limited and the only place to expand was into the existing parking lot.

When space is limited, build up not out. The parking lot was replaced with a seven level parking structure adding 614 spaces to meet the demand of the medical center expansion. The exterior of the structure used a white thin brick which architecturally blends with the existing building and the new addition.

The advantages of using precast concrete for parking garages includes: time, space and variety. There are a wide variety of facades available, the construction area doesn’t need to be much larger then the foot print of the building and the time to build in this case was only 4 months.

PCI Intl. Green Construction Code Webinars

March 29 & 31

The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is coming in March 2012. The IgCC will fundamentally alter the discussion of sustainability in the United States. Where the US Green Building Council’s LEED requirements focus on the sources and means of construction, IgCC will zero in on predicting and measuring building performance.

IgCC’s focus on energy efficiency, 60 year building life, and maintainability all play to precast concrete’s strengths. You need to learn about this revolutionary new code.

PCI will offer a webinar for architects and engineers to learn about the IgCC on March 29 and March 31 (two seminars each day, covering lunchtime in all four national time zones)

See the PCI Website for registration and times. Architects will be very interested in this webinar, as many are unaware that this code is coming. This is the perfect opportunity to set up a Lunch & Learn in a target architect’s office and establish a contact without having to deliver a presentation.
