Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, MA
WPI is building its third LEED certified building, this time its a well deserved recreational facility
replacing one from 1916. Scheduled for completion the summer of 2012, the new facility is 145,000 sq. ft.
and includes a natatorium under the multipurpose gymnasium.
Precast concrete addressed the vibration concern between the gymnasium and the natatorium. Unistress
Corporation manufactured special long span precast concrete arches as well as the double tee-beams which
form the roof of the pool and serve as the floor of a basketball court/multi-purpose gym. The design of
the arches would mitigate the vibration of the activities in the gymnasium while maintaining an unobstructed
open area for the pool. The arches gracefully span 110 feet creating a dramatic setting for those using the pool.
The flexibility of precast concrete to address concerns, stay on schedule and remain aesthetic will inspire
this academic community for decades.
Ellsworth Commons, Malta, NY
Ellsworth Commons is the vision of owner/contractor AP Construction, Ballston, NY. in response to the
incoming workforce that will be needed for the new GlobalFoundries fabrication facility also in Malta.
The commons, on 10 acres will consist of 4 multi use buildings, that include of 312 luxury apartments,
22 townhomes and 70,000 sq. ft. of retail space.
These buildings use a unique hybrid transfer deck system that allows the retail space thats a precast
concrete system to connect with the wood system used for the residential space above. The precast
concrete hollowcore planks by OldCastle provide a separation between retail and residential that
carries extensive load, offers 3 hour fire rating and buffers sound for residents.
The first residential/retail building at Ellsworth Commons should be completed and occupied in
spring of 2011.
WINTER CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Precast Concrete Structural Design Seminar
April 12, 2011 - New York, NY
April 28, 2011 - Boston
The PCI Structural Design Seminar is an advanced course for those who have designed with precast/prestressed concrete
in the past. This course will guide the attendee through the design of a 3-story, integrated precast office building
with the PCI Design Handbook (7th Edition) as a reference. Attendees will run calculations, review erection drawings
and learn how collaborations with the producer of structural concrete products can streamline the relay of technical
information to the production floor to ensure a final product that strictly adheres to specification and design.
SEMINAR FEES: $295 - This fee includes a copy of the PCI Design Handbook 7th Edition to use as a reference for years
to come, a CD of the handbook, seminar notes, breaks and lunch. Participants who are not already PCI members will also
receive a FREE one-year individual PCI membership. $225 - includes all of the materials above EXCEPT the PCI Design
Handbook text. You will receive a CD-only of the handbook. (Bring your laptop to class to facilitate your learning
PCI Intl. Green Construction Code Webinars
March 29 & 31
The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is coming in March 2012. The IgCC will fundamentally alter the
discussion of sustainability in the United States. Where the US Green Building Council’s LEED requirements
focus on the sources and means of construction, IgCC will zero in on predicting and measuring building performance.
IgCC’s focus on energy efficiency, 60 year building life, and maintainability all play to precast
concrete’s strengths. You need to learn about this revolutionary new code.
PCI will offer a webinar for architects and engineers to learn about the IgCC on March 29 and March 31 (two seminars
each day, covering lunchtime in all four national time zones)
See the PCI Website for registration and times. Architects will be very interested in this webinar, as many are
unaware that this code is coming. This is the perfect opportunity to set up a Lunch & Learn in a target
architect’s office and establish a contact without having to deliver a presentation.
