Fenway Residence Inn by Marriott, Boston, MA


The Fenway Residence Inn by Marriott, located in Boston, Massachusetts, is an 8-story structure which incorporates 118,000 sq. ft. of 8-in x 8-ft precast hollowcore plank covering the 175 guest room floor and ceiling space. Precast hollowcore plank was chosen to work within the girder-slab system providing added durability and speed of construction savings. J.P. Carrara & Sons, Inc. of Middlebury, VT.

Plainridge Race Course Parking Garage, Plainville, MA


Blakeslee Prestress Inc. of Branford CT, is working closely with JCJ Architecture of Hartford, Connecticut (architect), Desman Associates of Rocky Hill, Connecticut (engineer) and Currie Building Systems, Inc. of Worcester Massachusetts (contractor) on the Plainridge Race Course Parking Garage which will consist of three levels with 296,754 sq.ft. of supported structural area.

Blakeslee has begun erecting the 768 precast concrete pieces for the project which includes an aggressive schedule for erection to be completed in late December of 2012. To date the Northwest corner of the parking structure including the elevator shafts and stair tower is up.

Guide Details for Precast Approach Slabs Just Released

Bridge Guidelines

The PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee has just completed a series of guideline drawings, which represent the design, and detailing of precast concrete approach slabs. Precast approach slabs have been used on several Accelerated Bridge Construction projects in the Northeast.

High Performance Architectural Precast Wall Systems

High Performance Architectural Precast Concrete wall systems have gained incredible recognition from sustainability practitioners who herald its durability, energy efficiency, mold/mildew resistance, use of recycled materials, construction waste, and improved construction IAQ. Due to this recognition, these wall systems are being specified in K-12 school construction, condominiums, hospitals, university dormitories, science buildings, office complexes, and many other LEED-certified projects throughout the U.S. Topics that are covered in this workshop include: appearance options; sandwich-wall design; thermal performance; material R-values and assembly R-values; moisture management; and LEED credits to which precast concrete can contribute.

PCI Call for Papers and Student Posters – Submission Site is Now Open!

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) is now accepting abstracts for paper and poster sessions at the 2013 PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference, taking place September 21 – 24, in Grapevine, Texas. Abstracts are due by January 31, 2013, final papers are due May 12, 2013. Don’t miss out on this excellent opportunity t o gain exposure and contribute to the precast concrete structures industry’s body of knowledge.

All abstracts, papers, and student posters should relate to the design, analysis, materials, production, erection, sustainable benefits, or the maintenance and/or repair of precast concrete. Case studies, research, and project profiles are all welcome. Abstracts and papers will be peer-reviewed and final papers will be published in the 2013 PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference Proceedings.

Submitting an Abstract

PCI Announces New Blast Design Manual

PCI’s Blast-Resistant Design Manual, First Edition (MNL 141-12) is now available as an ePub at This manual describes the basic process of blast-resistant structural design for precast/prestressed concrete components. It includes calculating blast loads on the component, determining the dynamic response of the component, checking the response against specified performance criteria, designing the component connections, and checking the component for adequate shear capacity. The emphasis in this manual is on blast loads from exterior explosions and the dynamic analysis of blast-loaded structural components idealized as equivalent single degree of freedom systems. These assumptions simplify the blast-resistant design procedure discussed in this manual, but they apply to many cases of practical interest for anti-terrorism and force protection design. This publication is a combination of four documents on the use of precast concrete pavement systems (PCPS) and constitutes a state of the art report on this topic. Seismic Design of Precast/Prestressed Concrete Structures, Second Issue

This new manual assists in the design of precast concrete structures using the seismic design provisions of the 2006 edition of the International Building Code. These provisions are discussed in detail and illustrated with examples of typical building and parking structures located in regions of low-, moderate-, and high-seismic hazard.

Parking Structure Snow Removal Guidelines Available

In areas where winter weather affects the operation of a parking structure, removal of excess snow and ice is essential for functional performance, public safety, and durability. Snow removal guidelines found in PCI’s Maintenance Manual for Precast Parking Structures, section 2.2 gives explicit details on snow and ice removal, including planning, proper equipment, chemical deicers, written procedures, and how-to instruction for snow removal personnel.
