Wickford Junction Station Opens with Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The ground breaking took place in August 2010 and was scheduled for completion in June 2012. Today the station is ready ahead of schedule and under budget. Train whistles will begin to blow at the Wickford Junction Station after the ribbon cutting ceremony on April 23, 2012 with the ceremonial train departing at 10:15am.

The precast concrete station was designed to resemble a local red brick style 1880 millwork building. It conceals the 1,100 parking spaces while keeping the areas charm alive. The station boasts energy efficient lighting, a coffee shop, indoor waiting area, restrooms and charging stations for hybrid cars. The 848 foot platform has seating and covered areas to keep commuters out of bad weather.

The station offers 20 trips a day to Warwick T.F. Green, Providence and Boston. It will ease traffic on local Route 4 and I-95 corridor. This intermodal facility comes at tough time for spending and a great relief for commuters spending over $4.00 a gallon for gas.

Designing for Seismic Success with Precast Concrete

Byron Dietrich, S.E., Principal and Partner, TaylorTeter
Ned Cleland, Ph.D., P.E., President
Blue Ridge Design, Inc.
April 26, 2012

Over the past few years, we have seen some devastating earthquakes. These unpredictable events resulted in casualties; destroyed towns, cities and infrastructure; and took a toll on economies. The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute has done extensive research over the past decades to improve overall seismic design methodology and the use of precast concrete in seismic regions. This webinar will provide an overview of seismic design with precast concrete, highlighting some of the research and systems available. Specifically, the Precast Seismic Structural Systems (PRESSS) will be discussed. Case studies will used to help attendees learn how to apply these concepts and systems to their projects.

The International Green Construction Code: The Next Chapter in Design

Presenter: Greg Winkler, AIA, Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic Precast Association
May 24, 2012

The International Green Construction Code (IgCC), introduced earlier this year, promises to fundamentally alter the way owners and architects view sustainability. This presentation will cover the basic organization and operation of the IgCC, and review how this revolutionary new code will shift the sustainability discussion from manufacturing and construction to life-cycle performance and durability. The presentation will also review how precast concrete satisfies many of the proposed requirements in the IgCC.

Precast and Higher Ed Applications

Higher Ed

Sign up for the new AIA NCEES approved presentation on Precast Applications for Higher Education. PCI will provide over $300 of complimentary literature for your library.

This presentation helps the designer understand precast building systems and products that can be used in College University applications. Precast concrete components including hollow-core plank, architectural panels, and high performance insulated wall panels have been long viewed as a durable method in building construction. Proper detailing and specifying precast will be reviewed along with topics such as acoustical considerations; fire and energy efficiency. Presentations conducted at noontime include a complimentary lunch.

Implementing Disaster Resilient Construction in Your Community

Join us for an informative one-day workshop to integrate resilience planning into your essential services and infrastructure needs.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has identified the need for robustness, resourcefulness, and recovery as the key elements of resilience. Many of the criteria for enhanced resilience are documented in standards, FEMA documents, and voluntary programs such as the Institute of Business and Home Safety FORTIFIED program.

  • Underpin your community’s economic vitality, the health and safety of your citizens, and support longterm sustainability.
  • Recognize and assess local disaster risks your community may face. Evaluate mitigation measures based on the consequences and potential of those risks.
  • Understand the importance of incorporating FORTIFIED building programs into construction techniques to provide an optimum level of protection against a variety of natural hazards specific to your region.
  • Solidify your knowledge of Safe Rooms, Storm Shelters as well as disaster resilient concrete systems such as tilt-up, removable concrete forms, insulating concrete forms, pre-cast and concrete masonry.

Who Should Attend: Intended for community leaders, builders, contractors, architects, engineers, planners, and risk managers.

Continuing Education: Registered with the AIA-CES and GBCI for 6 CE Professional Development hours.

Lunch is provided.

Only $95 for six credit hours.
