NEXT Beam Assists in Accelerated Construction on Memorial Bridge Approach, Portsmouth, ME

Memorial Bridge

The Memorial Bridge over the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, ME is long overdue for replacement. The replacement bridge maintains the historic feel of the old bridge keeping the vertical lift and steel but the Kittery approach uses the newly developed Northeast Extreme Beam (NEXT Beam) which is fast becoming a standard for bridges in the Northeast. The HNTB Companies, Boston is the Architect/Engineer on the project and Dailey Precast, LLC of Shaftsbury, VT manufactured the precast components.

The PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee has just completed a series of guideline drawings, which represent the design, and detailing of precast concrete approach slabs. Precast approach slabs have been used on several Accelerated Bridge Construction projects in the Northeast.

Submit for PCI 2013 Design Awards / Deadline May 20th

Design Awards 2013

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has opened its submission site for the 51st annual PCI Design Awards. The purpose of the PCI Design Awards program is to recognize design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. There is no entry fee to make a submission. All winners will be showcased at the 2013 PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference and be included in a summary article that appears in PCI Journal, Aspire and Ascent magazines.

Entries are accepted in two primary categories: buildings and transportation structures. In order to qualify, the structure must be substantially constructed using precast concrete. For buildings, this includes precast concrete cladding systems (architectural precast), structural systems, or combinations of both. For transportation structures, this includes all types of bridges and other related components; however, the precast concrete must have been manufactured in a permanent precast concrete manufacturing plant.

PCI Announces New Blast Design Manual

PCI’s Blast-Resistant Design Manual, First Edition (MNL 141-12) is now available as an ePub at www.pci.org/epubs. This manual describes the basic process of blast-resistant structural design for precast/prestressed concrete components. It includes calculating blast loads on the component, determining the dynamic response of the component, checking the response against specified performance criteria, designing the component connections, and checking the component for adequate shear capacity. The emphasis in this manual is on blast loads from exterior explosions and the dynamic analysis of blast-loaded structural components idealized as equivalent single degree of freedom systems. These assumptions simplify the blast-resistant design procedure discussed in this manual, but they apply to many cases of practical interest for anti-terrorism and force protection design. State-of-the-Art Report on Precast Concrete Pavements

This publication is a combination of four documents on the use of precast concrete pavement systems (PCPS) and constitutes a state of the art report on this topic. The documents were developed through a cooperative agreement between the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Curved Precast Concrete Bridges State-of-the-Art Report

This publication details the application of curved precast concrete bridge design, fabrication, construction techniques, and considerations through the study of twelve related projects and constitutes a state of the art report on this topic. The document was written and intended to provide bridge owners, designers, fabricators and engineers an up-to-date reference in developing precast concrete bridge solutions for curved geometric situations. Seismic Design of Precast/Prestressed Concrete Structures, Second Issue

This new manual assists in the design of precast concrete structures using the seismic design provisions of the 2006 edition of the International Building Code. These provisions are discussed in detail and illustrated with examples of typical building and parking structures located in regions of low-, moderate-, and high-seismic hazard.

Parking Structure Snow Removal Guidelines Available

In areas where winter weather affects the operation of a parking structure, removal of excess snow and ice is essential for functional performance, public safety, and durability. Snow removal guidelines found in PCI’s Maintenance Manual for Precast Parking Structures, section 2.2 gives explicit details on snow and ice removal, including planning, proper equipment, chemical deicers, written procedures, and how-to instruction for snow removal personnel.
