Avalon Natick

Construction is nearing completion on Avalon Natick, a new high-rise luxury apartment community developed by AvalonBay Communities, Inc., located in Natick, MA.

Precast Is Chosen For The Aggressive Construction Schedule

AvalonBay Communities Inc. senior project manager, Paul Zarba explains “the experience using precast concrete hollowcore plank on masonry was most efficient, the process is very predictable as it relates to cycles and schedule.” He also emphasizes that “AvalonBay would definitely consider utilizing this building system in a future project with similar constraints (height) simply because it’s very appealing due to the speed and efficiencies in the overall system.”

Oldcastle Precast Building Systems of Selkirk, NY, manufactured and installed all the precast components for the two apartment buildings and the 137,036sq.ft., 417 vehicle elevated precast concrete parking structure was manufactured and installed by Unistress Corporation of Pittsfield, MA. Callahan, Inc., Bridgewater, MA, is the construction manager, Russell Scott Streedle & Capone Architects Inc., Cambridge, MA, is the architect and the engineer is DM Berg Consultants, Needham.

Albany and Saratoga Counties, NY

I-87 Twin Bridges over the The Mohawk

The deck replacement and steel rehabilitation of the I-87 Bridges (north bound and south bound bridges) over the Mohawk River had many challenges. The greatest challenge was to complete the rehabilitation without significantly impacting the 110,000 vehicles per day using this critical corridor.

This project was a part of both “The NY Works Program” and “Drivers First Initiative”. The Lane Construction Corporation of Cheshire, Connecticut was the project contractor, and the 224 precast bridge units and 12 precast approach slabs incorporated into this project were manufactured by the Fort Miller Co., Inc.

It will discuss how to use precast concrete wall systems to meet the latest code requirements such as continuous insulation and air barriers, and include topics such as moisture management, thermal mass effect and how to calculate effective R-values, integration with other building systems, and more. This session will also touch on the idea of resilience.

PCI Announces New Blast Design Manual

PCI’s Blast-Resistant Design Manual, First Edition (MNL 141-12) is now available as an ePub at This manual describes the basic process of blast-resistant structural design for precast/prestressed concrete components. It includes calculating blast loads on the component, determining the dynamic response of the component, checking the response against specified performance criteria, designing the component connections, and checking the component for adequate shear capacity. The emphasis in this manual is on blast loads from exterior explosions and the dynamic analysis of blast-loaded structural components idealized as equivalent single degree of freedom systems. These assumptions simplify the blast-resistant design procedure discussed in this manual, but they apply to many cases of practical interest for anti-terrorism and force protection design.
