Regeneron Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Tarrytown, NY
The two new laboratory buildings being constructed on Regeneron Pharmaceuticalâ€™s north campus in Tarrytown, NewYork, feature a two-phase construction schedule. The first consists of building the steel frame and cladding it with architectural precast concrete panels and curtain wall. Then a second contractor takes over to install the sensitive research and laboratory equipment needed for the employees.
The architectural design, by Perkins+Will, features a variety of setbacks and extensions that add geometric shapes and visual appeal. The buildings, encompassing about 300,000 square feet in all (180,000 and 120,000 square feet apiece), each feature two wings that meet at the middle at an obtuse angle, creating a wedge shape that leads visitors to the entries.
About 56,000 square feet of architectural precast concrete panels were erected, featuring a light sandblast finish and color to simulate a limestone appearance. About 350 panels were erected, with some large panels requiring close attention to handling. â€œThere was plenty of room on the site to stage the panels, as the buildings are in a fairly isolated portion of the campus,â€� explains John Ruggiero, project manager at John Moriarty & Associates, the general contractor on the project.
The architectural precast concrete components were fabricated by Coreslab Structures (CONN) Inc. in Thomaston, Connecticut.
Parking Structure Removal of Snow and Ice Alert
Piling snow on the top level of a parking facility can exceed the loading capacity of the structure. Snow should be hauled away or pushed off the deck to reduce the potential for damage or failure. The snow pushed off the deck should be in a fenced dumping zone with signage notify pedestrians of potential falling snow.
Snow plow blades should not come in direct contact with the deck, expansion joints, or joint sealants. Plow blades must be equipped with a well-maintained rubber to minimize impact damage and be kept a minimum of Â½ in. above these sensitive materials.
PCI Maintenance Manual for Precast Parking Structures section 2.2 will give additional guidance on snow removal.
