Discover High Performance Precast

Sponsored by PCI

Presenters: Brian Miller, PE, LEED AP

Date and Time:
April 21 (12:00 p.m. Eastern Time) and April 23 (12:00 p.m. Pacific Time)

Professional Development Hours Earned: 1

Level: Introductory

Description:
Recent code changes, increasing sustainability requirements, and a challenging economy are just some of the factors increasing demand for high performance structures. However, high performance is not business-as-usual. The concept of 'high performance' encompasses sustainability; however, it goes beyond a 'this-or-that' approach by requiring optimization of all relevant attributes for a project on a life cycle basis. This presentation will explain what high performance structures are, and how precast concrete can help you achieve your high performance project goals. The presentation also covers the basics of precast concrete, its applications, finishes, etc.

Middlebury College Field House, Middlebury, VT

Officials at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, have been planning to replace the West Stands in its historic Memorial Field for many years and even had the precast concrete components cast seven years ago, before the Great Recession derailed construction plans.

The project now is being completed and will be ready for the new football season in August.

Engelberth Construction, the construction manager on the project, recommended precast concrete for the project to match the original seating, which was built in 1923 using steel framing and cast-in-place concrete, explains Dick Terk, vice president of project management at the company and the project manager for the job. It also was chosen for its longevity and high-quality appearance, he notes.

J.P. Carrara & Sons Inc., served on a design-assist basis on the project. “Their proposal for the project provided the best understanding of the challenges we faced and offered the best approach for meeting them, says Terk. Adds Joe Carrara, President at J.P. Carrara, “The precast structure is highly complicated, using many custom beam, wall, raker and stadia bleacher sections. It required closer coordination among the design team than most projects to lay out and configure the precast framing.

The precast concrete components were fabricated by J.P. Carrara & Sons Inc., in Middlebury, VT.

High-Performance Precast Concrete Chosen for Reuse Project in Philadelphia, PA

Coreslab Structures (CONN) Inc. has been chosen to supply the architectural insulated precast concrete spandrels and column covers for recladding the 34 South 11th Street East Market Project in the heart of the Center City District. The building’s current façade will be removed to expose the existing concrete structure allowing the repurposing of this building to take advantage of the 14-foot ceiling heights. The architectural nature of the new façade will enjoy large glass widows with architectural precast panels framing the structure to provide a contemporary look. The deep grey color and texture of the architectural precast concrete panels as well as the channel fin shape will make a dramatic visual effect.
