Bayer B-27

The B27 building on Bayer Corp.'s West Haven, Conn., campus features a precast façade built to meet a tight schedule and provide aesthetic ties to nearby buildings.

Flad's designers worked with Bayer's users and facilities staff to develop concepts for this four-story building, which contains three laboratory floors and a penthouse floor for mechanical equipment. Related disciplines were grouped to enhance interaction and communication. Tall windows and higher ceilings along the perimeter walls allow ample light to penetrate deeply into the building, creating a convivial ambience.

The building's location on Bayer's campus is highly visible from the nearby freeway, so its design had to be distinctive. Precast panels were chosen to clad the building both because of the structure's tight completion schedule and also to tie in visually with adjacent precast concrete and brick façades of laboratory buildings finished in the 1980s.

A key challenge arose in designing, casting and erecting the 34-foot-diameter round tower on one end of the building. This was made more complex by the addition of walkout balconies onto some of these radius rooms, which served as conference centers. In addition, the building connects to an existing structure through an elevated walkway, and this structure had to connect across the span evenly. Designers also had to take into account the potential to expand the building in the future while designing the panelizing layout of the precast façade.
