Canton Viaduct Rehabilitation

The historic Canton Viaduct was originally built in 1835 with a single rail line, and was expanded in 1860 to accommodate two rail lines and has been in continuous rail service ever since. In 1994, The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) determined that the structure MUST BE widened, re-ballasted and strengthened to accommodate the new AMTRAK-NORTHEAST HIGH SPEED RAIL CORRIDOR service that was to come on-line in the year 2000. The structure needed to be completely rehabilitated while remaining IN CONTINUOUS RAIL SERVICE to prepare the structure for the new high speed trains that were to travel at speeds in excess of 125 miles per hour over this section of rail.
