Tappan Zee Bridge Toll Plaza
The Tappan Zee Bridge Toll Plaza in Tarrytown, New York is shown near completion of the reconstruction. A total of 183,000sf of pavement was removed and replaced in the Fall of 2001 and the Spring of 2002 with the newly developed precast concrete pavement Super-Slab® System. The contractor installed about 3,000sf of panels in each 8-hour, off-peak, traffic closure. The Toll Plaza services over 125,000 vehicles per day and the contractor faced a penalty of $1,300 per minute if the Toll Plaza was not opened at 6:00 a.m. each day. The installation proved so successful that no penalties were assessed and the "smoothness" of the riding surface, after panel placement, eliminated the need for diamond grinding.
The bedding grout distribution system consists of discrete grout channels and special foam gaskets bonded to the bottom of the slab creating individual grout chambers that ensure positive bedding.
The Super-Grader™ accurately grades the sub-grade to within a 1/16th of an inch creating a highly uniform sub-grade to receive the Super-Slab® panels.
